Emigre Magazine Spread

For this assignment, I created a magazine spread inspired by and on the topic of Emigre Magazine.

To do this, I researched their work. By reading books, their magazine, and online critiques and interviews, I created several spreads that mixed typefaces, colors, and geometric shapes to recreate their iconic brutalist style. I ultimately settled on this design with mixture of tight and loose leading, wide and narrow columns, and minimal images and patterns. Of course, by honoring the Emigre type foundry, I needed to use Emigre typefaces. I settled on mixing a few weights and styles of Mr. Eaves and Matrix, in addition to the non-Emigre typeface of OCR.

I wanted the type to speak for itself and chose to eliminate any photos that did not feature the designers or a black and white version of their magazine.

The off white background pays tribute to the slightly yellowed pages of "Emigre," which became a trademark of the magazine.
